Book Online ‣ The Cricket in Times Square ‣ George Selden

SUMMARY :
One nighttime, the sounds of NY City--the rumbling of subway trains, thrumming of automobile tires, hooting of horns, howling of brakes, and the babbling of voices--is normally interrupted by a sound that even Tucker Mouse, a jaded inhabitant of that time period Square, has never observed before. Mario, the boy of Mama and Papa Bellini, proprietors of the subway-station newsstand, had simply heard the audio once. That which was this different, strangely musical chirping? The one and only the mellifluous leg-rubbing of the relatively disoriented Chester Cricket from Connecticut. Attracted by the irresistible smell of liverwurst, Chester acquired foolishly jumped in to the picnic basket of some unsuspecting New Yorkers on a junket to the united states. Regardless of the insect's wurst intentions, he results in a pile of dirt in Situations Square.
Mario is elated to come across Chester. He begs his father and mother to permit him keep carefully the shiny insect in the newsstand, assuring his bug-fearing mom that crickets happen to be harmless, maybe even all the best. What ensues can be an entirely captivating spin on metropolis mouse/country mouse storyline, as Chester adjusts to the bustle of the big metropolis. Despite the cricket's relaxed matchbox bed (with Kleenex sheets); the fancy, seven-tiered pagoda cricket cage from Sai Fong's novelty store; delicious mulberry leaves; the jolly provider of Tucker Mouse and Harry Cat; and also his new-found fame simply because "the most well-known musician in NEW YORK," Chester commences to miss his calm lifestyle in the Connecticut countryside. The Cricket in Situations Square--a Newbery Honor Reserve in 1961--is certainly charmingly illustrated by the well-treasured Garth Williams, and the littlest information on this elegantly spun, vividly advised, amazingly suspenseful tale will stick to children for a long time and years. Make certain this common sits on the shelf of your selected child, right up coming to The Wind in the Willows.
